Arsenal hold talks with former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique about replacing Unai Emery after woeful Leicester result

Arsenal have reportedly made contact with Luis Enrique over the possibility of replacing under-fire boss Unai Emery.

Red-hot Jaime Vardy piled the pressure on the former Sevilla boss as the Leicester striker continued to haunt the Gunners.

The forward scored his ninth goal in nine starts against the Gunners to inspire the Foxes to a 2-0 win and into second in the Premier League on Saturday night.

Vardy, the top flight’s 11-goal leading scorer, also set up James Maddison’s clincher as Emery’s side slumped to a limp defeat at the King Power Stadium.

Alexandre Lacazette wasted Arsenal’s best chance and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a goal disallowed but the visitors were poor.

The Gunners, winless in the Premier League for over a month, slipped eight points behind the top four with Emery’s position under increasing scrutiny.

Reports in Spain suggest his time at the Emirates is up, with Enrique the frontrunner to take over in north London.

Spanish media outlet El Confidencial claim Arsenal’s head of football Raul Sanllehi is already sounding out potential candidates to take over.

And they claim he has been in touch in Enrique, who has been out of work since leaving his role as national boss for personal reasons in June just months before his daughter sadly passed away.

Despite winning just two games from their last 10, Emery is adamant his squad are improving.

“For me, as a coach, it’s about continuing stronger and improving with our players,” he said.

“I am speaking with the club to stay calm and to stay patient to improve and recover some confidence with some circumstances.

“We are receiving criticism but I know that’s my job. I’ve had lots of moments like that but I’ve recovered by working to get confidence, being together with the club and players.

“I accept all (of the criticism). I accept the applause and I accept it when they criticise us.

“I know when we win, they are going to be happy and when we lose, they are going to be sad. It’s normal.

“We need to stay calm and also keep improving things. Today we got one step ahead by being together and being strong defensively. But we lost because we were playing a very strong team in a good moment.”
