Championship results: Bamford finally scores in Leeds victory, O’Neill steers Stoke to win in first game as boss, West Brom stay top
Patrick Bamford finally ended his goal drought as he helped Leeds United to victory over Blackburn Rovers at Elland Road.
The English striker took 30 minutes to net his first goal since August – although it was from the penalty spot after Tosin Adarabioyo had fouled Luke Ayling in the area.
But it was a deserved lead for the hosts, who doubled it just five minutes later when Bamford played in Jack Harrison who made it 2-0 with a lovely finish.
Blackburn pulled one back before half-time with a header from Derrick Williams, but Leeds dominated the second half, with Tyler Roberts and Harrison both going close to making 3-1 before holding on for three points.
That win lifted Leeds to third, two points adrift of West Brom who beat Hull City 1-0 to maintain their lead at the top of the Championship.
Jake Livermore scored the winner against his former side with a rifled shot after a neat corner routine straight from the training ground.
Preston North End also continued their pursuit of automatic promotion with a thumping 3-1 win over Huddersfield, who were seven games unbeaten ahead of Saturday’s Deepdale clash.
The victory sees PNE sit in second place on goal different, level on points with third-place Leeds.
And there were finally celebrations at struggling Stoke City, as new manager Michael O’Neill enjoyed a perfect start with a 4-2 away win against relegation rivals Barnsley.
Sam Clucas scored twice, including a lobbed finish from almost the half-way line to open the scoring, with Lee Gregory’s penalty and Joe Allen’s strike handing them only their third win of the season.
Cameron McGeehan and Patrick Schmidt’s goals proved consolations for the rock-bottom Tykes, who are now five points from safety.
Stoke, meanwhile, can finally see the light as the win lifts them to within three points of climbing out of the bottom-three.
