David Silva returns, Kevin De Bruyne not in squad: Southampton vs Manchester City preview and confirmed line-ups
Manchester City will be desperate to get back to winning ways when they face Southampton following two successive Premier League defeats.
Their 2-1 loss at Leicester on Boxing Day condemned Pep Guardiola’s men to a third loss in four matches, after looking in imperious form before their match against Chelsea.
But they are now third, behind Tottenham and leaders Liverpool.
It is as many games as they had lost in the previous 70 matches in the league.
Southampton will seek a response of their own having suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to West Ham, after winning Ralph Hasenhüttl’s first two matches in charge.
The last time these two played at St Mary’s was on the final day of last season, when Gabriel Jesus scored in stoppage time to make City the first team in history to reach 100 points in a top-flight campaign.
What the managers are saying
Ralph Hasenhüttl (Southampton): “They can be (more dangerous). It’s not normal for Manchester City to lose two times in a row.”
Pep Guardiola (Manchester City): “They (the players) are good. The response has been good, they have been training good as always.
“We have belief, whether the situation is win or lose we have that. They are heroes for me. We need to analyse what we have done good and bad and more forward.”
Saints make six changes to the West Ham game as Charlie Austin comes in for Danny Ings.
Maya Yoshida, Yan Valery, Nathan Redmond and Stuart Armstrong also drop to the bench while Jannik Vestergaard is left out of the squad.
Meanwhile, Jack Stephens, James Ward-Prowse, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Mohamed Elyounoussi return and 18-year-old Kayne Ramsay makes his debut.
