Dustin Poirier vs Khabib Nurmagomedov: Possible unification title fight could happen at UFC 242
Dustin Poirier has posted a cryptic message on social media as speculation builds towards a bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Poirier, who is the current interim UFC lightweight champion wrote: ‘Location sent’ on his Twitter account.
The plan is for Nurmagomedov to make his next title defence as UFC lightweight champion against Poirier at UFC 242 which takes place on September 7 in Abu Dhabi.
Poirier, 30, has won his last four fights against Anthony Petits, Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez and, in April, earned the interim belt with a hard-fought unanimous decision points win over Max Holloway.
Nurmagomedov, who is currently serving a nine-month suspension for brawling after his submission win over Conor McGregor at UFC 229 last October, said he was impressed by Poirier’s title-winning performance.
“I think it was very good performance from Dustin Poirier,” said Nurmagomedov. “Honestly, before fight I think Holloway going to beat him.
“This is my prediction when you talk with friends, with father, with team, but he impressed me. Dustin has impressed me. I think he has very good boxing, much better than before.
“Every fight he becomes stronger, better in boxing on his feet.
“I think he deserve title shot. He is already interim UFC lightweight champion, I am real lightweight champion. We have to fight. Now we’re working on this.”
‘Diamond’ who has been fighting professionally since 2009, made his UFC debut in 2011 and has a record of 25 wins from 31 fights.
