England fans who booed Joe Gomez are ‘Neanderthal morons’, says appalled Jason Cundy
talkSPORT host Jason Cundy said he ‘despairs at the type of people who go to football matches’ after watching England fans boo defender Joe Gomez during Thursday’s 7-0 win over Montenegro.
Liverpool ace Gomez, 22, was jeered by a section of the home support at Wembley Stadium when he came off the bench in second half of the huge win that booked their place at Euro 2020.
Many fans were unhappy about the Three Lions boss’ treatment of arguably his best player, who was punished by sparking a physical confrontation with Gomez when they met up for England duty following Liverpool and Manchester City’s Premier League title showdown just days previously.
They made their feelings known when Gomez come on the pitch at Wembley.
Southgate said after the game he was disappointed and baffled by fans’ reaction to the youngster.
Sterling also came out in support of Gomez, writing on Twitter that he takes full responsibility for their clash and that supporters were wrong to boo the Liverpool man.
And Cundy, sitting alongside Adam Catterall, was equally appalled by their actions.
“Neanderthal morons,” said the former Chelsea man.
“It just leaves me sometimes despairing at what kind of people go to football matches.
“They’ve gone there, this young man is representing his county, he’s come on the pitch and has got to hear that?
“I personally hate booing your own team, it does absolutely nothing.
“But look at the bigger picture – Raheem Sterling has taken to Twitter [to say it was wrong], they’re booking Joe Gomez for something that was not his fault.
“It’s blown up and Southgate has dealt with it the way he has, let’s move on together.
“But instead you get morons, absolute morons booing.
