KSI vs Logan Paul 2: YouTubers’ fight sold more pay-per-views than Anthony Joshua’s shock defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr
Eddie Hearn has revealed the rematch between KSI and Logan Paul did more pay-per-views in the UK than Anthony Joshua’s shock defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr.
Britain’s Olajide Olatunji emerged victorious, via split decision, from his six-round cruiserweight contest on Sunday against fellow YouTube personality Paul in Los Angeles.
The much-hyped main event did not get underway until well after 5am, and according to Matchroom boss Hearn, who promoted the bout, it went on to become DAZN’s most-viewed PPV fight ever.
“The first fight did 1.2million pay-per-view buys globally,” Hearn told Sirius XM’s Fight Nation. “This was much, much bigger this time around.
“It’s the biggest pay-per-view in the UK of the year so far. That includes the first Joshua-Ruiz Jr fight from America. This fight was cheaper, was half the price of that.
“I believe DAZN will announce some numbers this week but I understand it was the most-viewed fight on DAZN so far.”
In June, Mexican-American Ruiz, knocked out AJ to claim his heavyweight titles in a huge sporting shock. The pair will do battle again in December, but Hearn says the two novices brought in a new audience.
“It was a big subscription driver as well,” added Hearn. “It wasn’t just those two key territories, it was all those other little territories. “When we look at the breakdown on Fite TV, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Eastern Europe, Africa – it was everywhere.
“You don’t realise the audience these guys have. They brought our sport to reach new ground and reach new territories, new demographics and new markets.”
Despite the card featuring actual world champions Devin Haney and Billy Joe Saunders, Hearn said the social media stars stole the show in Los Angeles.
“The crazy thing about this sport is, we wanted to bring in professional boxing with this circus, if you like.
“We wanted to showcase to this audience what’s great about the sport, and those guys – KSI and Logan Paul – ended up showcasing it.
“The Devin Haney fight was great. Billy Joe Saunders came back from behind to win by knockout, but that fight [KSI and Paul] was everything that’s great about boxing, and we ended up seeing that from two YouTubers.
“Everyone gave them stick from the boxing community, but now you have to give them respect. I thought it was absolutely brilliant.”
