Liverpool legend Steve Nicol urges club to sign Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld and pair him with Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has urged his old club to sign Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld.

The 30-year-old is about to enter the final year of his contract after Spurs triggered an extension clause in his contract in January.

Toby Alderweireld has been linked with a move to Manchester United in the past

Reports suggest Alderweireld has a £25million release clause and its activation seems inevitable given his quality.

And ex-Reds full-back Nicol, who made 473 appearances for the club between 1981 and 1994, reckons the Belgium international would thrive alongside Virgil van Dijk.

He said: “One hundred per cent this guy’s going. We just don’t know where it is.

“Again, this is a player who I think most teams in the world would want as their centre-back.

Steve Nicol spent 13 years of his career at Liverpool

“I wouldn’t mind him at Liverpool alongside Van Dijk, I think that would be a great pairing.”

Alderweireld would only strengthen an already watertight defence, which has conceded just 20 goals in the Premier League this season.

Liverpool  have plenty of depth in central defence with Van Dijk, Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.
