Liverpool look set to lose 2 players in next 24 hours
Mamadou Sakho – Roma
Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho could be heading for a move away from Anfield this summer. It’s been reported that Roma are lining up a loan move for the French defender, with an option to sign the 26-year old on a permanent deal. Sakho has been with the Reds for 3 years now since joining from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint Germain for £18 million.
Sakho played an important role in Liverpool’s run to the final of the Europa League last season, though his brilliant performances can be partly attributed to the fact he was using performance enhancing drugs, knowingly or otherwise, during the tournament.
The Frenchman has made 80 appearances for Liverpool during his 3 years and Jurgen Klopp may not be too keen to see him go unless he is able to sign a replacement. It is rumoured that Klopp is unhappy with the defender though as he sent the player home early from their pre-season tour for breaking several rules.
Lucas Leiva – Galatasaray
Brazilian defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva is on the verge of an exit from Anfield. He is reported to be leaving for Turkish giants Galatasaray in a deal worth around £2.5 million. The move will mark the end of Lucas’ 9 year stay in Merseyside, where he won the League Cup in 2012 and Liverpool player of the year the previous year. The 29-year old is currently Liverpool’s longest serving player, though that record looks likely to end within the next 24 hours. His playing time in Jurgen Klopp’s side was severely limited since the turn of the year, with the Brazilian making just 8 appearances. This was in large part due to the fact that Jordan Henderson, Emre Can, Joe Allen and James Milner were all ahead of him in Klopp’s pecking order.
The loss of Leiva shouldn’t be detrimental, as Liverpool still have plenty of options to play in a defensive midfield role, however it would be a wise move to find a replacement, sooner rather than later, for the outgoing Mamadou Sakho.
