Matthijs de Ligt: Rio Ferdinand lauds Ajax skipper as ‘the best young defender on the planet’ after Champions League win
Rio Ferdinand has hailed Ajax skipper Matthijs de Ligt as ‘the best young defender on the planet’ following his outstanding display in their Champions League win over Juventus.
The 19-year-old scored his side’s second goal as the Dutch giants stunned Juventus in the last eight of the Champions League with a 3-2 aggregate victory.
And following the game the Manchester United legend was full of praise for the centre-half.
“De Ligt, the best young centre-half on the planet,” the former England defender said on BT Sport.
“He has beautiful and majestic ball-playing ability and scored a huge goal as well there as well.
“The blend they’ve got with the young players and the older more experienced players – Tadic was almost given away by Southampton and is now producing miracles in the Champions League this year.
“It’s exciting times for Ajax.”
De Ligt’s performances over recent years has seen him linked with some of the world’s biggest clubs, with his latest display set to bring about even more admirers in his direction.
Prior to the club’s famous win on Tuesday, Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag admitted that there is ‘zero chance’ of his young captain staying at the club beyond this summer.
The teenager has been at the centre of a transfer tussle after team-mate De Jong agreed to join Barcelona at the end of the season in a £65m deal.

The Spanish giants are also favourites to also land De Lig, despite interest elsewhere from Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Juventus.

“There are so many clubs interested in him. He will leave us this summer, but I don’t know whether he’ll join Bayern or Barcelona.”
