Ole Gunnar Solskjaer takes charge of Manchester United for the first time on Saturday evening when the club face Cardiff – live on talkSPORT.

Having been appointed caretaker manager until the end of the season, the Old Trafford favourite will try and restore some pride in the side that is well behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Solskjaer is in charge until the end of the season

He is loved by fans, having spent 11 years at the club between 1996 and 2007, most memorably scoring the winner in the 1999 Champions League final.

Solskjaer was signed from Molde for just £1.5m and supporters could be forgiven for being slightly underwhelmed considering it was Alan Shearer Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to sign.

Shearer joined Newcastle for £15m not that the 23-year-old ‘baby-face assassin‘ felt any expectation.

Solskjaer’s finest moment for Man United came in 1999 when his goal won his side the Champions League final

“The gaffer said: ‘For the first six months, play in the reserves and get used to England, then from January we might try to get you into the first team,’” he told FourFourTwo magazine.

“But I scored two in my first reserves game, Andy Cole got injured and we needed strikers. I came on and scored six minutes into my debut against Blackburn. I knew I’d score goals at United. I’d always been clinical finishing chances. As a youngster on the playground, even if there was no keeper I would always shoot just inside the posts, because no goalkeeper would save it.”
