Raheem Sterling slams England fans who booed Joe Gomez at Wembley during Montenegro clash

Raheem Sterling has lashed out at England fans who booed Joe Gomez during the 7-0 rout of Montenegro at Wembley.

Manchester City winger Sterling missed the victory which secured the Three Lions’ passage to Euro 2020 after his skirmish with Gomez at St George’s Park on Monday.

Liverpool defender Gomez was jeered when he came on in the second half, leaving the 23-year-old unhappy in the stands.

Sterling tweeted after the match: “To all the England fans, I wanted to leave things as it was but tonight I have to speak again.

“It was hard for me to see my team-mate get booed for something that was my fault. Joe hasn’t done anything wrong and for me to see someone who keeps his head down and work hard…

“Especially after a difficult week for him to be booed when he came on tonight was wrong. I’ve taken full responsibility and accepted the consequence. I felt as though I had to say this, get home safe every one.”

Harry Kane’s hat-trick helped Gareth Southgate’s side roar past Montenegro and seal Euro 2020 qualification as England celebrated their 1,000th match in style.

Former captains and Three Lions greats were among those in attendance on a landmark occasion at Wembley, where onlookers were not only able to celebrate 147 years of history but enjoy another glimpse at an exciting future.

Southgate’s men sealed progress to the Euro 2020 finals with a match to spare as a rampant first-half display set up a 7-0 win against hapless Montenegro, with Kane’s treble doing the damage in front of Sir Geoff Hurst, a man who knows a thing or two about hat-tricks.

Securing automatic qualification for next summer’s tournament means all of the Three Lions’ group games will be staged at Wembley, where Southgate’s men will believe they can then return for the semis and final.
