Serie A Preview, Betting Odds and Key Statistics – 22nd December

Serie A Preview, Betting Odds and Key Statistics – 22nd December

There’s a different feel to Serie A this season, with a busy Christmas schedule. Usually, the league takes a break at this time of year, but this season there are three rounds of games in the next week. We’ve already put together a complete guide to all the rounds, kick-off times and TV games. Given that it’s a new addition to Italian football, this weekend starts a key week for all 20 sides.

The weekend is building up to a showdown between Juventus and Roma, which can be seen as men against boys. All of the action is confined to Saturday, with 10 hours of Italian football to follow. We’ve already covered previews for each individual game. However, here we’re looking at the key statistics and our latest Serie A betting tips for this weekend’s biggest matches, while we have a 7/1 bet to round things off.

Lazio v Cagliari

11:30 am, Eleven Sports 1

Lazio continue their top four push this weekend, but their poor form continues to hang over the side. They are expected to claim all three points on Saturday, but Cagliari make this trip with little to lose. They also head here with a decent scoring record of late, and they appear to be more than capable of taking advantage of the woes which currently face manager Simeone Inzaghi at the Stadio Olimpico.

This is a fixture which Lazio are likely to enjoy. They’ve averaged 2.6 goals per game against Cagliari across their last seven meetings at home. However, they’re in their worst run of league form under Simone Inzaghi, something which has left them struggling to make the top four this season.

The visitors have seen both teams score in their last five away trips, while Lazio have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 11 matches. We don’t see them turning around their form, having failed to win their last seven games in all competitions. They’re without a clean sheet at home in six outings, but with a great record at home to Cagliari, we’re backing both teams to score.

AC Milan v Fiorentina

2 pm

AC Milan's Gennaro Gattuso

AC Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso is apparently under pressure again, but he has the side on course for a top-four finish. The Rossoneri do need to win this clash with Fiorentina, given that they are in a tight battle with Lazio and Atalanta for a spot in the Champions League next term. They come into this clash as favourites to see off Fiorentina, thanks to an impressive record in head to head clashes between the pair.

Milan have won three of their last five meeting with Fiorentina, which includes three straight victories at the San Siro. The Rossoneri have scored 245 goals against la Viola, more than any other side they’ve faced. Having built up a decent home record this term, we fully expect Gattuso’s side to give their manager’s employment status a boost with three points this weekend.

Fiorentina have drawn two and lost five of their last seven trips to this region of Italy, including May’s 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Milan. Meanwhile, the visitors remain without a win on the road in the league this term. Given that their four defeats in Serie A this term have all come against side who are currently in the top five, fourth-placed Milan can complete a clean sweep for the league’s top teams.

Chievo v Inter Milan

5 pm, Eleven Sports 1

AC Milan vs Inter Milan

Chievo look set to end 2018 in last place in the league, they’re yet to win a game in the current campaign. They have just four points to their name this season, putting them nine points shy of safety. The last thing they need is to meet a side who have a great record against them in the league.

Inter have won their last three meetings with Chievo, racking up an aggregate score of 10-2 in that time. That’s helped by forward Mauro Icardi, who has scored five goals in his last six meetings with the Gialloblu. Chievo seem to have issues facing any side from Lombardy, not just Inter. They’ve lost 12 of their last 13 Serie A meetings with them, so Inter seem like worthy favourites here.

Chievo have lost six of their eight home games, and three of their four meetings with top half sides here. They’ve conceded 11 times in those four, something Inter are likely to add to this weekend. We think it’s worth backing the Nerazzurri for a victory, as they look to add to their 1-0 win over Udinese last time out.

Juventus v Roma

7:30 pm, Eleven Sports 1

Juventus Dybala Inter Milan

The night wraps up with Juventus clashing with Roma, the biggest match of the day. The champions are in a dominant position in the league, while they face a team who have been really inconsistent this term. We’ve already covered why the champions should be favoured given Roma’s lack of experience, but history also suggests that Juve should be favoured.

No side has managed more top-flight victories over Roma, claiming 80 Serie A wins against the Giallorossi. They’ve on their best winning run at home to Roma since the 60s, while they’ve been the outstanding side in Europe this season. They’ve dropped just two points all season, winning 30 of their 35 league games across 2018.

The Old Lady have averaged two goals per game at home, conceding just 0.5 per match in return. The hosts should add to a seven-game winning run in the league, given the gulf between the sides. The 22 point gap between the two is the biggest before a clash since the 2002/03 season, and we see it getting bigger on Saturday night.
