Sheffield Wednesday want promotion specialist Steve Bruce as their new manager

Steve Bruce is in line for a return to management with Sheffield Wednesday.

The former Manchester United defender is the frontrunner to succeed Jos Luhukay, who was sacked on Friday after 11 months in charge.

The Championship club want to appoint an experienced manager to lead them away from relegation danger.

Wednesday are currently sitting 18th in the table ahead of Saturday’s visit of Preston, just six points above the drop zone.

Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri put the club up for sale this week but wants an experienced manager in place to steer them away from danger while he holds talks over handing over control.

He is now understood to have earmarked Bruce as the number one target to take over the team.

Steve Bruce left Villa in October

The 57-year-old was sacked as Aston Villa boss in October but has huge experience in the game and has won promotion to the Premier League four times.

According to The Sun, Bruce is keen on the job but may not be willing to it until January.

He has been affected by the loss of both parents this year and is said to want to spend Christmas and New Year with his family before returning to management.

That could mean that his backroom team of Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence join the club first, with Bruce to follow in early 2019.
