Tottenham benefit hugely from tightest VAR call in Premier League this season as Sheffield United have goal ruled out for offside

There surely couldn’t be a closer offside call than Roberto Firmino’s armpit? Think again.

The Liverpool forward was denied a goal during their visit to Aston Villa last weekend as VAR ruled his armpit was ahead of the last man. Who knew one could score with their armpit?

However, there was an even closer call this weekend at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Spurs’ game at home to Sheffield United.

And it was Mauricio Pochettino’s side – the Argentine is against the new technology by the way – who hugely benefited from the decision.

Spurs took the lead thanks to Heung-min Son’s goal but David McGoldrick levelled things up, or so he thought…

As is protocol, the crew at Stockley Park in London checked the goal just to make sure it was ok to be awarded.

McGoldrick was not offside at any point in the move but there were question marks surrounding John Lundstram’s position, who put in a cross from the right earlier on.

And after what seemed like an eternity, the goal was disallowed with Lundstram’s toe ruled to be offside.

Below you can see just how tight the decision was.
